Chapter 9

THE MILES SLIPPED BEHIND them, allowing her thoughts to come full circle. Sage mentally prepared for what was at hand. Liam and Jack were the best in their field. Eventually, they’d put an end to the mystery of who this man was, and find out why he had his sights on her.

Sam inched down the drive studying the layout of the property. Everything looked the same. The comforting scene brought the warmth she needed.

“Sweetheart, this is beautiful.” Liam scanned the property.

“Thanks, I love it here,” she added, giving the door a shove.

“I’d give up Manhattan for this any day. You did good, Kiddo.” Liam followed her into the kitchen. Sam looked around, checking every available nook and cranny.

“Thanks, Daddy. Make yourselves at home. I’ll make a pot of coffee. Also, there are two guest bedrooms upstairs, two full baths, and a study. You’ll have a bird’s eye view of the property,” she said, closing the pantry door.

“That’s perfect! Shortly we’ll set up shop and alert the new team we’re here.” Liam shot Sam a glance. Sage sat three steaming mugs of coffee on the table, taking one, sliding into a chair across from Liam.

“What do we do now?” She asked.

“Just go about your daily schedule. When this guy realizes we left New York, he’ll make his way back to Vermont. Until we figure out what his agenda is, we need him to feel comfortable, or he’ll head back to whatever dark hole he crawled out of, and we’ll never find him. There’s somethin’ we need to keep in mind. This guy is not your run of the mill criminal. He’s using technology to fly under the radar. He's had extensive training.” Liam pulled his 9 ml from his shoulder holster, laying it on the table. Sam nodded, chewing on the thought.

“You mentioned that he might be Ayden’s killer. What would make you think that other than you have something you’re not telling me. That’s why you canceled your trip up to see me, Isn’t it?” She quizzed. Sam looked over the rim of his coffee mug, glancing at Sage. Liam shifted uncomfortably in the chair.

“Yes. That’s why. We had some positive information from our street contacts. I had to stay and sort it out.”

“You could have explained all this to me. I was a walking bullseye and didn’t even know it.” A heavy silence carried her annoyance.

“I couldn’t take that chance. If the wrong person got their hands on this information, it could blow this thing wide open. We’d have another mess pasted across the front page of the newspaper, destroying everything we’ve been working for. A feeling isn’t always enough to go on.”

“I just don’t get it. An assassin? Ayden was good and honest. The pro bono cases he took proved that.”

“I don’t get it either. We’re gonna connect the dots starting with Ayden’s murder. Next, we’re gonna figure out what this guy's problem is and find out why he’s been watching you. I put a call into my buddy Captain Wyatt in Virginia.
