Chapter 9
THE MILES SLIPPED BEHIND them, allowing her thoughts to come full circle. Sage mentally prepared for what was at hand. Liam and Jack were the best in their field. Eventually, theyâd put an end to the mystery of who this man was, and find out why he had his sights on her.
Sam inched down the drive studying the layout of the property. Everything looked the same. The comforting scene brought the warmth she needed.
âSweetheart, this is beautiful.â Liam scanned the property.
âThanks, I love it here,â she added, giving the door a shove.
âIâd give up Manhattan for this any day. You did good, Kiddo.â Liam followed her into the kitchen. Sam looked around, checking every available nook and cranny.
âThanks, Daddy. Make yourselves at home. Iâll make a pot of coffee. Also, there are two guest bedrooms upstairs, two full baths, and a study. Youâll have a birdâs eye view of the property,â she said, closing the pantry door.
âThatâs perfect! Shortly weâll set up shop and alert the new team weâre here.â Liam shot Sam a glance. Sage sat three steaming mugs of coffee on the table, taking one, sliding into a chair across from Liam.
âWhat do we do now?â She asked.
âJust go about your daily schedule. When this guy realizes we left New York, heâll make his way back to Vermont. Until we figure out what his agenda is, we need him to feel comfortable, or heâll head back to whatever dark hole he crawled out of, and weâll never find him. Thereâs somethinâ we need to keep in mind. This guy is not your run of the mill criminal. Heâs using technology to fly under the radar. He's had extensive training.â Liam pulled his 9 ml from his shoulder holster, laying it on the table. Sam nodded, chewing on the thought.
âYou mentioned that he might be Aydenâs killer. What would make you think that other than you have something youâre not telling me. Thatâs why you canceled your trip up to see me, Isnât it?â She quizzed. Sam looked over the rim of his coffee mug, glancing at Sage. Liam shifted uncomfortably in the chair.
âYes. Thatâs why. We had some positive information from our street contacts. I had to stay and sort it out.â
âYou could have explained all this to me. I was a walking bullseye and didnât even know it.â A heavy silence carried her annoyance.
âI couldnât take that chance. If the wrong person got their hands on this information, it could blow this thing wide open. Weâd have another mess pasted across the front page of the newspaper, destroying everything weâve been working for. A feeling isnât always enough to go on.â
âI just donât get it. An assassin? Ayden was good and honest. The pro bono cases he took proved that.â
âI donât get it either. Weâre gonna connect the dots starting with Aydenâs murder. Next, weâre gonna figure out what this guy's problem is and find out why heâs been watching you. I put a call into my buddy Captain Wyatt in Virginia.
